We do live in an electronic age for sure I still marvel that growing up there weren't VCR's, CD's, MP3's, computers or cell phones and yet it seems we were always doing something. Now I have a 6 year old who can queue up cartoons to watch instantly on Netflix on our computer and who pauses the DVR so he can run to the bathroom.

Paper football in which you folded up a piece of paper and flipped through your friend's hands uprights was popular.

The classic card game of War-no skill and as long as you held onto one Ace the game could last for hours.

Traveling games-find highway signs that begin the letters of the alphabet and try to go A-Z before you arrive at your destination.

See how many state license plates you can find on your highway trip.

I'm sure there are many more but those come to mind.

Penny football. According to Wikepedia, though, "an electronic version of the game has now been produced."

Gosh, Maikael and I have been having this conversation a lot recently, wondering what crazy technology will be hip when our daughter is a kid. It will undoubtedly to so different than our own childhoods. When I was a teenage, there was a lot of hanging out with my friends and being involved in different types of music lessons and groups. I rarely remember watching TV -- didn't have time! When I complained of being bored, my mom would suggest cleaning out the car or reorganizing a closet, so I quickly learned never to complain of being bored!

You know I can completely relate to the lame attempt to introduce my son to something that doesn't involve a screen. And I think I'd give myself a "D" on monitoring his usage. I would think your guys would be into hacky sack. Of course, that's too physical for my son. Last night he bet me $10 that he can go for a week without playing on the computer. Of course that still leaves him tv, the wii, and the DS. Not exactly a hardship.
