An older woman told me that 50 was the age when, at the beach, one can no longer wave to friends (arm flab). For me it arrived early.

EEK! I know exactly what you mean! And what is worse is if you try to buy any nice dress year-round, there are no sleeves to be found for miles! Shopping for a holiday party dress or a winter wedding has become a nightmare event. Partly because I don't enjoy wearing sleeveless anymore and partly because it's cold! Even here in Los Angeles the weather warrants a sleeve in December. And a covered toe on my shoe, but that, apparently, is for another topic!

PS If I didn't know better, I would swear I was the girl to the left: glasses, hair pulled back, shapeless shirt - ah youth!

Actually I have good luck at Macy's with the designer Sigrid Olsen. Hip but appropriate and affordable. Banana Republic has good stuff but look for the sales. I've also found that adding fun jewelry to basic neutrals draws the eye. I now get more compliments on necklaces (from my grandmother, thrift shops or Anne Taylor Loft) than on clothing. Definitely a sign of advancing age.

Clothes shopping is my worst nightmare these days. For a while I thought it was the florescent lights--but it turns out it's actually my advancing age. Where can one find clothes that are a little hip but don't make you look like you're trying to be your 19-year-old daugther??

Hey Tommyboy, I wish I knew! A burnt marshmallow? A toad? The chopped off head of a poisonous snake, which we were instructed to kill with a hoe? Ten years later, the girl you're talking about later recognized me in a grocery store in Washington DC where we both happened to be living. At least I thought it just "happened."

This has nothing to do with your topic, but what is in your hands that is so fascinating to the girl who looks like she grew up to be a stalker?
