Elizabeth, we spent two nights at Phantom Ranch. They provided breakfast, dinner, and bag lunches. We did a short day hike to a gorgeous secluded waterfall on our one full day down there, then took a long nap, played Scrabble, and generally recovered. It's not easy to get the tickets for this particular junket - major props to my brother who pulled off the feat.
Wendy, I had forgotten some of it too until I started writing. Still one of my favorite experiences of all time. We have to do another two-couple trip again soon.

Jennifer, you've got to read my post today, because I, too, was inspired by this PBS series! http://www.lifeinpencil.com/wp/?p=877

I am taking the Grand Canyon hike next April, for MY friend Tim's 30th birthday. We are so looking forward to it (I only live a six-hour drive away, and haven't done it in my five years here, if you can believe it). How long did you spend at the bottom, at Phantom? There's a great book I just finished called 'In the Heart of the Canyon,' by Elisabeth Hyde. It's a novel about a group of strangers who finds themselves on the Colorado River for 13 days, traversing the canyon on a rafting trip. Having hiked the Grand Canyon, I think you'd appreciate it.

Also, I really resonated with what you said at the end of your post, about the focus of the documentary. Last night one of the commentators said the parks are really about the PEOPLE; certainly the people who built them, but, I think, definitely the people who visit them. I LOVE your final photo: it says more than words ever could.
