It is great to see more people coming to see what we think is one of the best cities in the world! I would like to recommend our blog for safety tips, as well as cultural activities that are sure to make the trip as authentic as possible.

He took a new sketchbook and brand-new pencils. And I wish he had seen Woody Allen's take on Barcelona before he left, but no, he didn't.

I can't wait to hear how Ian feels about the art of Barcelona...and Gaudi's architecture. Will he be sketching throughout his travels? Did he watch the Woody Allen film "Vicky Cristina Barcelona" before he left?

Travel is old hat to Ian who has grown up in a family that embraced regular travel, packed up and spent time away at camp or friends' vacations, and developed his own sense of style. He should be fine.
Meanwhile, the younger boys, unsettled by the
departure of the first born and strongest, bleated that they had to know immediately who would receive Crown Prince Ian's quarters. Next time decompress for a day fellas before asking about succession. Oooh what if behavior markers had been invoked for the room privileges?

Thanks everyone - this is all a pretty big deal for our family, especially given the fact that although Ian is very familiar with going into Philadelphia on his own and roaming around, he's never traveled alone, nor even gone to sleepaway camp before. He's learning the ropes but it is, of course, a huge challenge. I've loved reading all of your comments and memories of youthful foreign travel. If you want to reach Ian, please email me through this blog and I'll send you his address.

Oh Jennifer - I teared up reading this and thinking of our own farewell scene at the airport just a few short weeks ago as Emmy left for England and Barcelona. We're on the other end of the trip now, as you will be before you know it - with a new, slightly more mature, much more worldly and confident, different yet the same child. Bittersweet, to be sure, but oh so wonderful and exciting to catch a glimpse of the adults they are becoming.

Go '91 babies!

Reminds me of the leave-taking of my one summer spent entirely in Europe (a little Paris and London, mostly Amsterdam) at age 19. Great, maturing fun. Saw a lot, played a lot, worked a lot (but not hard -- it was my father's company, actually learned a little, did not improve my ability to speak Dutch (which had been part of the plan but fell through because everyone wanted me to speak English for their kids), got the best haircut of my life in Paris (soon thereafter my hair embarked upon a one-way, far-away trip of its own), fell in love (which lasted about three weeks after I returned and cost me one pair of Levi's that I mailed over after returning -- those events in reverse and short order, which makes me wonder)and basically enjoyed one of the best summers of my life.

And yes, we were aided by friends and relatives throughout. Couldn't have done it without them.

Bon Voyage, Ian; you will grow on this trip.

Bonne Chance, Jennifer and Chris and bros; enjoy the extra room -- and the new brother when he returns.

I echo Terry's comments above--feel a bit heart-sick reading this and thinking that our turn will son be here! Am sure that one day I'll reach Liz's (hi, Liz!) calm, been-there, done-that attitude, but it sure won't be in the next 12 months!

can't wait to see you in a few days with my big, soon-to-fly-the-coop guy.
xx, -p

Freddy did much the same; gave us hugs, turned around and headed in the opposite direction with not a moment's hesitation. I always wondered who was being brave for who that afternoon.

Good for our young men, certainly can't refer to them as boys anymore.

Loved the story behind the St. Christopher's medal too. Great stuff!

Thinking of all you.

P.S. This will probably sound somewhat irreverent at the moment, but the truth is that as veteran of two years, I no longer well up with tears...I just start humming "Born Free"...and smile (for both of us).

My heart literally aches seeing these pictures and hearing your words. How great it must be to see your son go off on an incredible adventure. How painful it must be to know that he is leaving home. It all seems so exciting until I think about my son doing this in less than two years. I will look to you for council! I hope your handsome son arrived safely and is already having fun!
