Hi Emily! Here's one from way back that my teenage boys watched with me a few summers ago and really enjoyed -- it's going to surprise you: Bye, Bye Birdie!
A classic with great music, cast, and dance numbers. As you might know, it's kind of a spoof of the era when Elvis Presley, who was already a huge heartthrob, signed up for the Army. Ann-Margret, Dick Van Dyke and more! I saw it when I was too little to understand all of the jokes, but loved it then and was so happy that my guys saw the merit of this early-Sixties hit.

I'm gonna have to echo someone else's suggestion of St. Elmo's Fire, Breakfast Club, Sixteen Candles, and Pretty in Pink. Those are my absolute faves from being a teen. Oh, and Some Kind of Wonderful.

Oh my...our boys are now 35 and 38 - your blog proves that some things never change :-). We used to borrow a 16mm projector and films from our rural central library system. Unreal (or is it un-reel!) So they would have a sound base in this side of our cultural literacy.
In the age of the 16mm, we made sure that they saw "Shane" and "Casa Blanca" and a dozen more that escape me.
I am glad to see that someone has already listed "Breakfast Club (you may need to explain the reference to Barry Manilow.) If you need to throw something in to let them know just how cool you are and that you can laugh together, "Strange Brew" had them rolling on the floor one snow day in late 80's.
Not sure if they can be rented from Netflicks, but in the late 80's Steven Spielberg produced a TV series called "Amazing Stories" All of these were great, but the one I wouldn't miss is "The Mission."
Also, Breaking Away. My guys were cyclist - not basketball players (long story). One of them still is...3 years ago, at the age of 34, he was the #1 racer in the State of Wisconsin With a degree in phylosophy from McGill, he is referred to as the guy who is into Zen and the art of bicycle maintenance.)
This is WAY too long.
   Really enjoy your writing.

Trying to get into blogging again, catching up on my favorite reads, and I stumble on this ...

First, I must share that my mother got her lay-preaching license, and in her sermon last week she actually quoted Prophet Bueller (yes, she said it just that way) when he said "Life moves pretty fast. If you don't stop and look around once in a while, you could miss it."

Now for some of my must see movies:

For classic fun, you should definitely do Sneakers and Real Genius (who can forget "Too Many Secrets", "This, for instance, was filed under H for Toy", or "Because if I wear it anywhere else, it chafes"). How about Jumpin' Jack Flash: "I'm a little black lady in a big silver box!"

I can't recommend the Godfather trilogy enough, but it's a much heavier movie. I rate it up there with The Usual Suspects: "The greatest trick the Devil ever pulled was convincing the world he didn't exist", The Silence of the Lambs: "I'm having an old friend for dinner.", Fight Club: "The first rule of Fight Club..." and Se7en (many memorable lines, but non quotable in a family friendly environment)

For something in between those, I'd vote for Robin Hood, Primal Fear, and Presumed Innocent.

Hope some of those work for 'ya. They're eternal favorites around here!

Hello fellow MOBs, Teacher Mom writing from Beantown;
MOBx4+ dad=5M!
Of course we love movies, it was a break between flying pillows, charlie horses, snacks, snack and more snacks and of course the never ending hum of ESPN sports center. The kitchen is never closed in an all male household no matter how hard I try.......

We highly recommend Apollo 13, Castaway, Forrest Gump (for 10ish if you're a democrat, probably 16 if you're a Santorum supporter). Everybody LOVES Dodgeball, Anchorman, plus every now and then we fall into a Disney oldie and we all become capitivated sharing both our pasts! We bought the Monty Python movies for a 10 hour drive to see my brother in Pittsburgh (someone please exam my brain...4 boys 6-17 + Dad with 4 movies full of bathroom humor and bad sex jokes).

But now that they are older- I miss the kid movies as they have been replaced by Mumford and Sons, Wilco, Avett Brothers and soooo many songs they say that "I just have to hear," as the volume shakes and shimmies my car down the road! My itunes is brimming with workout songs. Now we have rocked together at U2 with them, taken them to see the Stones and Paul McCartney. However,..... it's also the constant negotiation to help them buy tickets, and drive far to many concerts. Stay MOBs tuned for more fun ahead:)

So enjoy all the movies, the music is fun too as the ever lasting party of an all male household continues!

Stand By Me.
When Jesse had a broken leg and was bed ridden, it was the perfect time for me to recapture my youthful viewing pleasure and we began the foray with Ferris. Of course it ended with Meatballs, and Caddyshack. Not a great mom choice (boobies), but what the hell. The point is, Stand By Me was voted best picture by the Oscar committee in the hospital bed. And FYI if Ferris is on , ever, at any point, stops us dead in our tracks.

Ferris Bueller is one of our favorites (used the "Bueller...Bueller..." quote just last weekend to get everyone moving). We just watched To Kill a Mockingbird with our kids...great for the 15 yr old, but the 12 yr old...not so much (though may get him to read the book). Our better efforts have included ET, Monty Python & the Holy Grail, Driving Miss Daisy and Big. We also watched Meatballs with them...not as funny as we'd remembered it (or perhaps our kids are just more mature than we are...??!)
