In this case, I'm a believer in the old saying, "if you have to ask, you can't afford it." As in kids shouldn't need to be asked to do their chores. They should be automatic and scheduled, like brushing teeth and getting to school on time. (As if) These days, parents treat chores as if they were 'special' or 'above and beyond' demands.

We're still working on this in our house. Should be fully implemented as soon as the youngest goes off to college...

As a lazy oaf I like to think that it provides a commiserative bond between a wife and her mother-in-law.

My 'boys' are raised and I've had/have these same fears about future DIL's..what will they think of me (especially when I read about Pioneer's kids up at 4:30). I had to chuckle when I read your blog, as it helped me to feel better. Thanks Jennifer.

Don't despair, Ruth - that was a particularly bad night. What works well is the reward at the end of the task: Yes, I will grant your wish when you've put away your folded laundry/cleaned up your room/raked the leaves. Generally this works like a charm. I don't consider it bribery, I think it's simply human nature to respond to incentives.

You mean they don't improve as they get older? I've been clinging to the hope that they'll improve as they get older. (Whimper!)
