Lindsay! I'm so touched that the straw angel is your best loved ornament. That has to be one of your oldest possessions, period.

I love the baby shoes as ornaments! My oldest (almost 30 years) and most treasured ornament is a straw angel you gave me in college! I do have too many ornaments now so I don't put them all on the tree every year, but I always spend time sorting through the ornament box for memories!

Sarah, how funny that you have a Putz lamb too - they show up often in magazine spreads on Christmas collectibles. And how sad about your uncle. Incredible that an ear infection could ultimately set off a deadly chain of events. Poor Tad, and your poor grandmother.

Jim, I love the memory of Big Bird worshipping Baby Jesus in the manger. He was the right scale, as I recall. Sam always had that artistic eye.

On a lighter note, I recognize that Putz lamb! My sister and I would move it to the back of the tree with all the other ornaments we considered embarrassing. Fortunately the lamb has survived, and I wouldn't part with mine either!

About your Grandfather's brother...It's so tempting to ignore helmets and proper protection, and other safety measure and remedies we take for granted! We need to remember those stories when we're tempted! Here's a tragic story about an event that happened this time of year. My father's brother Tad Lawrence Bailey was six years old when he developed an ear infection. The was well before World War II, so antibiotics weren't available. Tad died. It was right before Christmas. Now that I'm a mother I understand some of Grandmother's "melancholy."

That's a beautiful posting, Jen, that transcends the moniker of "blog". I am most honored to be part of the family tapestry. Although not of the ornament genre, one of my favorite Christmas images was finding a figurine of Big Bird in the manger scene.

I've often thought of our Christmas tree as a story to be told. Every year as we put the ornaments on it, I get to tell Little Bug where each one comes from. We've added new additions from the ornaments he's brought home from art class at school.

What a beautiful blog post. Thank you!
