Covered is important. Matching is desirable but not required. Whole family has a fear of "floods" so we're okay on that. Best advice from the mother of an older son - wait for some lovely young thing to decide an intervention is necessary. Also, attendance at a college or university with a "hipster" population will tend to wear off on even the most recalcitrant of dressers. However, the tendency to attach to one particular shirt/sweatshirt/pair of jeans doesn't seem to abate. And don't sweat the bar mitzvah suit too much, because I guarantee you that he will grow out of it within six months.

I had one of each: a fashion plate, who once dragged me through an entire mall on a quest for just the right jeans, and another who's fashion criterion was, "Is everything covered? I'm good."

The sock infraction is interesting. All teenage boys now wear black socks even with shorts, which used to be a dorky old-man thing but on them, looks cool. However, Ian started wearing cropped black socks with his business shoes and suits, so you would see a lot of bare ankle. I thought that looked awful until we got a male college intern last summer who did the same thing. So I think having bare ankles with suits is actually the style with these guys - and somehow, they can get away with it. As for rules, just about our only one now is "no jeans in church."

Did you know they still make Garanimals?? I couldn't believe it when I saw them recently. Anyway, I agree completely, 100%. My sister teased my son mercilessly when we arrived in Denver with him looking like a Christmas tree in shades of red and green.

For the most part, I'm pretty okay with letting Ian wear whatever strikes his fancy. I'm just not up for the fight that would ensue should I try to change him. I have to pick my arguments carefully or there'd never be a moment of peace here. The teeth brushing is a higher priority for me than the clothes.

I figure someday, probably when he discovers girls, he might discover a sense of fashion.
