None of my boys had been as fearless as Spencer! I was sure disaster was going to happen in the Fairy Forest.

I remember going to Winterthur with you! It was very charming. We had all 5 young blond boys in tow. Spencer, the youngest, was just 18 months or so and was balancing across a log over a small stream. I was surprised after your own three boys you were worried about him, but everything turned out okay!

Pete, I never knew the Springton reservoir was once a boating mecca. Now that you mention it, you're right, DelCo has an appalling dearth of public recreational options. Why do we live here?
And Jeanne, this time we rented from an outfitter in Wilmington, with a put-in at the Brandywine River Museum. You get out near the Smithbridge Road covered bridge.

We try to canoe down the Brandywine each summer. It's a great way to beat the heat. Did you go from Northbrook?

Yes, Marsh Creek rents. This brings up one of my favorite rants, which is that Delaware County has no recreational lakes for its residents...as opposed to Bucks, Montco, and Chester Counties which provide bountiful parks and waterways. There used to be boating access to the Springton reservoir, but 9/11 provided a convenient excuse to close it (because terrorists are just *dying* to blow the dam and flood Broomall. It's a major military target).

Alright, I'll stop now. But Delaware County stinks in so many ways.

MG, we did all those trips when the boys were younger. They still remember them all vividly. Here's our favorite alternative to the Philadelphia zoo: go to Winterthur. There's a sweet children's garden for the very young with fairy trees and little fountains that spray you. When my boys were older, they were entertained for hours at the fish ponds and the frog pool. The place is so beautiful and soul restoring for all.

I love that idea. I am the queen of day trips right now but for younger kids. I love the idea of the canoe trip for when the boys are a little older. Currently, Strasburg Railroad, the Crayola Factory, and the Herr's Factory are more our speed.
BTW--if you haven't been, I think the Herr's Factory is fun for all ages. There is the business aspect as well as the fresh-from-the-fryer chips!

Emily, does Marsh Creek rent kayaks or do you have to bring your own?
Elizabeth, true, we are lucky enough to be self-employed...so lots of flexibility in our schedule. Meanwhile, I enjoy YOU the ability to do a quick jaunt to Santa Fe.

Your kids are lucky to have parents that will take a whole day off in the middle of the week to take them to do something cool! Sounds fabulous to me. My favorite day trip is to Santa Fe. I don't go often enough.

We try to get out on the water at least 2 or 3 times each month -- our venue of choice is Marsh Creek state park. The water does have a calming and restorative effect - once the boys stop fighitng about who gets which kayak and we all agree that "IT IS NOT A RACE". Nature. Sigh.
