What a trip and the memories too! I would probably be right in between as well. Storms fascinate me but I wholeheartedly respect Mother Nature.

I really enjoyed reading your blog, I felt like I was there on your trip, or was wishing anyway. Sounds like a fun adventure!! I especially liked your questions and answer session between you and your husband. I could see that exact conversation happening between myself and my husband. That really made me laugh and thanks for that!

I agree with Leslie...the storm chaser thing may be genetic. I have similar recollections about the excitement anticipating some hurricane (maybe Hurricane Belle in 1976?), including a trip with my dad to downtown Newport to see how busy things were on the docks as the winds picked up and the tide came in. As they say in New England, "Wicked cool."

I love this, Em. You sure have a gift for timing -- delivering a punch line at just the right time -- as a writer.

I was so oblivious to our peril, and didn't even know about the safety of the ditch. I'll have to brush up on my storm safety before our next road trip!

The storm chaser thing may be attributed to the rather morbid fascination with hurricanes that comes from growing up in Newport. As soon as Hurricane Bob had finished going over Aquidneck Island in August 1991, Uncle Mike came right over, picked up my sister and me (leaving my 5 year old and 2 year old with my father, not a known childcare expert) to survey the damage. Sorry, it may be genetic.

Oh my, what a dramatic start to your trip! We had similarly crazy weather in Virginia and as we drove, I was also eyeing the ditches alongside the road, planning our bail-out should a cyclone start spinning out of the weird clouds overhead. Growing up in Kansas, I've had that drummed into my head. Glad your group vacation turned out to have a storybook ending!
