I actually faked my way through an eye exam once so I could GET glasses. I decided they were cool at some point -- and I was not a particularly cool person as a fifth grader -- and REALLY wanted a fashion accessory. I had two pairs: one with pink plastic frames, and another with bright red, thin metal frames. CLASSY!! Come junior high, my eye problems -- and the attendant glasses -- mysteriously disappeared.

When Haley got glasses (4th grade), I feared the worst. I was worried that it would be a huge deal. Guess what, she took it in stride. Never really complained. Only wears them in class. Left them in her desk at school in elementary school. (I got her a zip pouch that fits into her 3 ring binder for MS.) She always has them with her. Of course Chase is not happy, but don't relive your anxieties. He may be ok with it.

I guess Chase comes from a family of Geeks as gammy and papa as well as his great grandparents had glasses BUT he'll be truly a sophisticate when he dons them. If I recall his dad would only wear his when absolutely necessaary at first then..We love Chase regardless and glasses can be real cool these days!!

I will never forget that awful day in fifth grade. We were watching the movie "Brian's Song" and most of the girls were crying because the football star gets cancer and dies. I was crying because the school nurse just told me that I needed to get glasses!!!

The legacy continues in our house as well - - Julia (in third grade) got glasses recently for her nearsightedness. Of course, we got her a pair of glasses that seemed horribly expensive for a 9 year old because she liked them and I wanted her to be happy wearing them. Needless to say, she only seems to wear her glasses when I yell at her to put them on!!!

Will just got one of those notices. He looks so grown up when he wears his new pair. And boy, they are expensive.

Emily, throughout history the common wisdom was that smart people were the ones reading a lot of books, and ruining their eyesight with too much eyestrain and poor lighting. I never have gotten the conclusive statement from a medical person as to whether abundant reading and poor lighting can cause eyesight to deteriorate, but anyway, that's where the stereotype comes from.

Our 15-year-old son needs glasses for distance, and he so far refuses to get them. The nurse at school said he won't be permitted to drive without them; we're hoping this provides enough motivation for him in the coming year!

Geeks Rule...eventually! I got my first pair of Coke bottle bottoms in first grade and wore them proudly. Of course, I was such a geek that I didn't KNOW I was a geek. Glasses are so much cooler these days, though; perhaps it's a chance for Chase to make a serious fashion statement? Forgive me - I did not have brothers...
