You have been perfect Godparents for Liam! Many shared vacations, one with Liam by himself, cards, perfect T-shirts, and checks. One of Liam's favorites-the shopping trip at Borders while I met with my Godson, Ian!

We had some friends who wanted us to be their son's godparents. Since we weren't Greek Orthodox, that didn't fly with their family. We were appointed his "social" godparents, charged with making sure he was on top of the latest trends in society. We were included in the ceremony, along with his "spiritual" godparents.

MG, you are clearly one of those amazing godparents who are much in demand. I love the Lenox tradition and the Facebook quizzing. Elizabeth, let us know if you end up choosing a godparent for your baby girl on the way. Emily, good attitude - just be there.

As a Catholic, we really did choose godparents for their original Catholic purpose: to be an example of life in our faith. Fortunately that was easy for us. We have also been humbled and honored to have been so chosen by friends for their children. I try to be good at both parts--the fun secular stuff, and the religious piece. I send Lenox snowflake ornaments to my godchildren every year. I send children's bibles and other religiously themed gifts at the right occasion. When one of my goddaughters was preparing recently for her confirmation, I would quiz her on the seven gifts of the Holy Spirit via Facebook. And we make a special effort to let them know, even the ones far away who don't know us in person, that we know them and we love them and will always look out for them, whether that's a special effort to go out of town for their play, or notes sent when we learn of other accomplishments. I love these relationships, both familial and chosen-family. Thanks for bringing a smile to my face thinking about these godkids of mine today!

I read this article on Sunday with utter fascination. Namely, because I never had a godparent, while my husband has a very active godmother in his life. Maikael and I learned that we had completely definitions and understandings of godparents, and I was glad the article addressed the historical roots (we were both sort of right). I've always associated godparents with being a Catholic thing, but apparently I'm wrong (I was raised with no organized religion). As we're preparing to have our own child in a few months (EEK!), I'm not sure if we'll choose a godparent or not. My initial thought is to choose someone who you can rely on and trust -- whether that's biological or chosen family.

I am completely with you here. We chose friends as godparents because our family was already on the "go-to" list due to DNA matching. It is an opportunity to expand your family. I see this more of an honor than an obligation. We dont call on the godparents of our kids to do anything -- just be there.
