Alas, I'm sending them anyway. Even though I promised last year was my last snail mail year. Why? Because I asked for e-mail addresses so that I could go green and save paper and my uncle cheerfully replied that it puts people out of work, thus not being very green.

So. Holiday letters it is. Sigh.

Digital cameras have made this process sooo much easier. In the old days, when my kids were younger (5 years ago) we had to takes rolls of photos and hold our breath hoping one would work! The trade off, is now my 13 year old wants to protect his "brand" and has strong opinions about the photo, and the background-no polka dots!

For this very reason, I am not sending out cards this year. My thought process went like this, "No one else's holiday season is going to be made qualitatively better by receiving a card from me. My my holiday season will be made qualitatively worse by trying to get umpty-thousand cards out the door." So I'm just not doing it. It's not a permanent decision. Next year I'll probably return to card-sending. But I got a late start on things this year and cards were deemed expendable. Hopefully no one cuts me from their card list because of it.

PS - Loved the Babble article on Hanukkah. We are Christian, but live in a neighborhood that is at least 50% orthodox Jewish. So I have a real respect for keeping true to your own faith.

Wow, Emily, have you been living inside my brain? :)Facebook really complicates card-giving, doesn't it? In fact, I've recently decided that Facebook complicates my LIFE. I especially like the section on photos, because when I was little I had a really over-the-top, toothy grin. My dad would always say, "Smile nice. Like a NICE little girl."

Love the Babble piece! And the lights are always brighter on the other side: My son is afraid he's been too naughty for presents from Santa this year so he asked if we could celebrate Hannukah instead! Eight nights of guaranteed presents--even socks and underwear--sounded like a better deal to him.
We almost always invite two Jewish friends' families over to decorate our tree during Hannukah, and they bring a menorah and latkes and we all enjoy both. It's absolutely one of my favorite nights of the holiday season.
Happy Hannukah!
