Oh boy. I'm still calling Rhode Island home, and the Mendell parental units are my only claim in terms of real estate on Aquidneck Island! My standard answer when asked where I'm from is "I live in New Jersey, but I'm FROM Rhode Island." Then people think I mean Providence and I have to elaborate to be sure they understand that I am from a whole different place, a whole 35 minutes away. Yes, I've made a wonderful home in my wonderful community here in South Orange, but somehow, when I cross whatever bridge gets me onto the island, I am home in a way I never am here. There is an openness to the sky, the availability of water, the ocean smell in the air (not always a highlight, but still - home) that puts me at ease. Our Newport is not stuffy or touristy. It is sand in your shoes, cutoffs shorts and a t-shirt at the bar, people who remember when you moved all the way from Newport to Middletown and some damn fine clam chowder. It's the bluest blue, the greenest green and the whitest white. I think I need a trip home!

This is an interesting post, Em, especially since I just returned "home" from visiting "home" in Seattle, where I grew up. Yes: upon further inspection, I refer to both places as home, although I don't really feel as if Seattle is my home anymore. My dad insisted on driving past my childhood home while we were there: it doesn't make me weepy or nostalgic that I, nor my dad, no longer lives there.

Katrina Kenison did an interesting piece on this subject last week that I think you might like: http://www.katrinakenison.com/ordinary-day-journal/2010/6/26/homecomings.html

I'm slightly ashamed to say that Easton is still "home" for me. Do you think if you grew up in just one house instead of two, you might still call it home?

One of the most endearing things about Dave is his boyishness but hmmm, with all due respect...I think it's high time he started to view Wallingford as "home" and Rhode Island as "launching pad."
