One year my mom developed an eye twitch at my sister's bowling party. We now affectionately refer to it as her famous "birthday-bowling-alley-eye-twitch". Great post and pics Jessie!

Jessie, that's a lot to deal with in a short time span! I hope you're recovering is going well. The formula Elizabeth suggests makes perfect sense. Children get so hyped over birthday party built-up that the actual event can almost never live up to the expectations. Definitely keep it simple from now on!

My daughter is turning one in September, and we've decided not to throw her a party. And yet, as the first birthday party invitations from her friends begin rolling in, I can feel the tug toward, "Well, maybe just a LITTLE party..." And so it begins. My mom's rule growing up, which is a tradition I plan on continuing, is to have as many guests as the age of the child.

So well said! I too have gotten carried away with birthday parties and having them at home is the double whammy of unmet expectations for everyone. This becomes less of a problem as they get older -- although I cant wait to hear about Emma and Phoebes sweet sixteen parties. (sorry about that -- keep breathing)
