Apparently I don’t do laundry like your mother either,which is why your brother does all the laundry in our house! He doesn’t like the way I fold, I’m not neat enough, no straight edges, blah blah. It’s too bad because now he does all the laundry, what a shame

I love doing ‘whites’ ~ adding bleach and lavender scented softener. So, yes I am a color separater. Clothes don’t run anymore some of you say? Hmmm. This has not been my experience. A couple of times a sneaky red item or two has found its way to my whites, and my husband bvd’s all turned pink! They are now household rags. Other than that, I am what we refer to it our family as a ‘sweeper.’ Like a dirt devil, I can straighten up a room by picking up, organizing and tidying when in a frenzy of clean up mode.

I am just like you right down to the no dryer sheets. Just detergent, whatever is on sale. Shove it all in the washer, then shove it all in the dryer. Done. But can’t say I actually enjoy it. If I had to pick one chore, I would say it is cleaning the fridge. I just love me a shiny, sparkly clean fridge. I clean in it, over it, under it, through it, pull all parts out and scrub. I actually enjoy that chore, mostly because it doesn’t have to be done on a weekly basis.

I don’t suck at it. I’m very good right up until I turn the dryer on… That’s why I love wrinkle-free clothes!

I’m a sorter. I sort lots of things. Even though I’m a generally messy person, I feel more at ease knowing that everything belongs somewhere. (I like organizing the craft center for that same reason – markers, crayons, glitter, stones, beads each have their own place). That’s what I like about the laundry and why I do my very best to make sure that only I do the laundry in our house. (And if you think that clothes don’t bleed, my kids are still laughing about the pink underwear that used to be white until an unnamed family member (and non-sorting-believer) did the laundry with a new red shirt).

I have to admit, I don’t get any particular joy out of any housework. Does that make me “un-motherly”. I do wonder why I am the only one that sees the dog hair, dirty socks, book bags, books, papers, cleats, and general clutter that piles up in every corner and counter. Do you think it is something that happens during childbirth?

I’m a laundry lover too… but I’m an excellent folder – I love to fold the towels so that all the edges are smooth, and I like to make sure shirts are folded in such a way that they have nice creases and don’t need ironing. Because I hate ironing… I like efficiency, so if I fold the laundry correctly, I don’t have to iron. I do laundry like my parents, but I’m more particular about the folding.

Emily, much like you, I could really give a fig about how the laundry is done. My mother-in-law was recently in town — I hope she doesn’t read this — and she literally looked over my shoulder as I sorted clothes (for her benefit). She monitored the settings, the water selection, the use of dryer sheets. It all made me very nervous. She shrieked when I put a wet, white hoodie on top of wet blue jeans (you’re right, colors rarely bleed anymore). Personally, I love to vacuum. I am doing a post in the next few days on “Reclaiming the Home Arts,” which I think you’ll resonate with.

I’m with you on the sorting issue — never saw the need for it, myself.

And I have to say, right now, there are really NO household chores I like. When I’m less stressed, I like cleaning the floors, just because I like clean floors.

I enjoy washing dishes, loading the dishwasher, tidying up the kitchen in general. My mom tried to teach me to always run a sink full of hot soapy water, and then rinse, but I tend to just wash things under the running faucet. I also prefer weeding to planting. I’m a cleaner-upper.
