Interesting post.
My daughter who is 6 1/2 sees no color except in terms of she has dark hair, he has light brown hair, etc.
I was raised (for the most part) to treat everyone as equal. My daughter and I have dear, wonderful friends that are black, Indian, Vietnamese, and so on.
We are all the same and we all have to report to "The Big Guy Upstairs" some day.

Same here. I don't get the impression of Officer Crowley being a hot head, but I know you were just postulating.
I'm too lazy to check on this, but I thought I heard that the incident took place at night. If that's the case, I'm wondering why Gates didn't just wait until the morning to deal with his stuck front door? He had already let himself in by the back door.
Of course, the details can go on and on but you are so right in your overarching view.

I live close to the area in which this unfortunate incident occurred. It is the ONLY thing being discussed on the radio this past week and that includes sports talk. Sadly it is issues like this that polarize an area like ours because it is assumed that even today white and black people can not get along-add law enforcement to the mix and the story gets more heated.

I urge anyone that has not heard Officer Crowley's account of the events that led up to the arrest to do so. Whether you agree with what he ultimately did you can understand how the situation escalated. His audio of his account of the story can be heard on WEEI.com.
It should also be noted that Officer Crowley teaches a racial profiling course and sadly was the officer who tried unsuccessfully to revive Reggie Lewis a noted Celtic player who was revered in this area and died at a tragically young age.

The President should never made a remark about this case-lets hope it was a mistake he learns from and admits was not smart.

Mr. Gates is a scholar who over reacted (lost in this story is that this neighborhood has had a rash of breakins-including one in Mr. Gates home). Officer Crowley should have walked away once he realized that the situation was escalating and no immediate danger was at hand. This is not a black/white issue other than the two main participants were of each race.

There are calls for a handshake to be made between the two-that would do more for than race relations than all this bickering.

I agree with you completely about Obama -- there is no way he does not get hurt by commenting on this sorry affair. That was a dumb move.
