Good neighbors are the best, but I'm convinced they're even better when there's an acre between you and them.

I love hearing "good neighbor" stories, mostly because it's becoming more rare these days to really KNOW your neighbors. Recently, when we returned from a trip, the mail carrier came to deliver 2 weeks worth of mail, and we weren't home. Our neighbor jumped in, and offered to take care of it. Left us a note, and offered his mail services anytime. It was so refreshing...I hadn't realized how much I missed having great neighbors. And yes...watching dogs (or iguanas) is a great lesson, and a great responsibility. Very cool.

We live on a lagoon so we come face to face with our neighbors when we are sailing or kayaking. We have one set of neighbors whose dock I ran into while learning to sail. The best part was that the entire lagoon echoed with laughter. It had been a hot Sunday and everybody watched as I smashed head on to their lagoon!

My next door neighbors are the best. When I discovered that my miniscule oven would not hold the gigantic turkey I bought for Christmas dinner for 22, they opened their door and their oven while they were away that day. When my husband was confined to a hospital bed in our family room for months after an accident, their three wonderful children would come over with CDs, DVDs, gigantic puzzles, a Rubics Cube, plus endless knock knock jokes and entertain a seriously bored man, never once flinching at all the metal work protruding from his damaged legs and bringing him sorely needed laughs. Love them!

One neighbor is nosy and snooty. Another is indifferent. The other is friendly, but never at home. Growing up, we had marvelous neighbors, so it makes me a little sad. This is not "our neighborhood," but it is for now.

Here's my story: we had kind elderly neighbors who had never had children, and who insisted we call them "Uncle Rudy" and "Aunt Glad" (Gladys). As lovely as they were, I wasn't comfortable with these names. Anyway, they would allow me to bring friends into their basement and play with the souvenir musical instruments they had collected in their world travels. Castanets, tambourines, and a wind instrument from the Andes were my favorites. Rudy was devastated when Glad died. He planned a long trip. I was hired to collect the mail. Heartbroken, Rudy never returned(he dropped dead). I still feel guilty from my disappointment that he wouldn't be bringing back a new instrument (and that I wouldn't be paid for bringing in the mail!) I need to remind myself of this when my kids sometimes astonish me with their selfishness!

On one side, my neighbors are the most wonderful people around. They're both in their 90's, they both claimed my kids as their own grandkids when we first moved to the area (and maintain that even after my parents moved 2 years later). When we were struggling to find a new church, they invited us to church with them. Heck, they even tell me (continually) that I have quiet children. I just say they need to turn up their hearing aids!

On the other side...well...dunno. I had some wonderful neighbors (also going to the same church), but they moved about 18 months ago to a less expensive place. The new neighbors came in, did some cosmetic work on the house, and it's already up for sale. I hope they're just trying to flip it for a profit rather than being chased out by us, but who knows?!?!? Not once have they come over to talk to us, stopped to chat on the front yard, or anything. They confuse me.

We too are lucky in our neighbors. On one side is a vacant lot populated by tall trees, bunnies, and deer. On the other side is the home of a retired couple. She longs for the chance to play with our boys (sometimes I think she'd like us to call on her more often; if she weren't the sweetest person around, I'd watch my back) and he, a talented carpenter, thrills at the chance to do handyman tasks around our house (which is particularly nice since Husband and I are about as un-handy as it gets). I am so glad for this post because it reminds me how fortunate we are to have them in our lives and on our street.

Our young neighbors just had their first baby. Both sets of neighbors, one on each side of us. So in the middle of our teen driven days we get to see babies growing and changing and making the world much cuter. I love the days that I have their baby smell left on my shirt after a quick cuddle. The lizard lives in our house but the babies live next door. :)
