I miss those days of hand-me-downs! Take advantage of it while you can! Now my son is man-sized at 6’1″, he doesn’t get so much anymore.

Why do just the kids get hand me downs? I could do with a lovely Weikel or a nicely colored shirt from Andrew Lehr Collection. I’m not fussy and promise to squeeze my fat arms into anything.

How lucky you are!! I had my daughter so late in life that none of my friends or relatives have kids even close to her size or age. But I pass along her clothes (the ones that are nice and well kept) as often as I can. Very clever post. Had me going too, thinking I was really out of the loop.

This is great, Emily. At first I thought, “Hmm, I’ve never heard of Weikel — I must be out of the fashion loop.” Clever set-up. For a brief period of time, I received shipments from a mysteriously rich cousin in a far-away land (Texas, which seemed like another country growing up in Seattle). The box was stuffed to the gills with designer duds which I loved; I’m not sure why the shipments stopped.

We don’t get a lot of hand-me-downs for Ben. He has one older cousin, who is harder on clothes than even Ben. But for Maddie, there’s a steady stream from our very thoughtful neighbors, Bella and Melanie. Anything I buy is viewed with skepticism. But if Bella or Melanie owned and wore it, it has instant credibility.

I miss those boxes of hand-me-downs! My cousin Jane in Santa Barbara had three boys before I had my three boys, and she always found the greatest clothing and passed it on. I remember a toddler-sized Patagonia pull-over sweatshirt that must have originally cost a fortune, which my guys wore to shreds. My friends Lindsay and Penny had boys similar in age to mine and we used to pass around baby clothes. Jane’s Joe wore a primary colored striped shirt which shows up later in pictures of my Ian and Penny’s Colin. Those were the days, my friend…now long gone.

However, I might have a Malcolm or two for Noah.

My husband’s first cousins (of which there are many) are all relatively local, and most had boys about 3-5 years before we did. We have saved a fortune on clothes. Unfortunately, we can’t pay it forward as well, since Garrick is a one-boy wrecking machine and nothing escapes him unscathed.
