This is a great blog! I love it- being the mom of a girl and a boy- both “adults” now- I can totally appreciate being a mom of a boy~ I am laughing so hard and just finished the first page! Love this!

My brother Ray and I grew up on Mad too, Jennifer! Still love it. Great seeing these hilarious pages from their latest issue and I agree with your insights. I only disagree with you on one point — you mention the genius of the Mad creative team, but say that MJ was tremendously talented. I do think much of MJ’s work was at the level of inspired/genius, or at least very highly gifted. A lot of artists from the past were pretty weird, too, but we revere their work — maybe partly because we didn’t live through a media blitz of their private weirdness!

There are few better primers for MoBers. Unbeknownst to your mother she saved you and your sons years of pharmaceutical treatments and psycho therapy, respectively.
Of course, when your world view and current events are increasingly filtered through the satiric media (The Daily Show, The Onion, SNL), young people start with a diminished view of government and its elected leaders to implement policy.

I loved Mad, too — I had a subscription. I loved the back cover, where you could pinch the two sides together to reveal a “secret message.”

I loved Mad magazine as a child — and its probably why I love reading today. My mom would always let me buy them off the rack and I would devour them. I dont know why I dont read it anymore — but I think I will start again. Thanks for the inspiration!
