Love love love it! (Having just returned from five days of tuning out everything except my family, I am especially appreciative of this post.)

Thanks for posting this (and thanks to Dave for directing me to it!) I have always believed in the mercy rule. Everyone needs a break every once in awhile and crying over homework, stressing out over a project, and grading all work right away is sometimes NOT worth it. If your child is in my class and needs mercy, just slap a "Mercy!" post-it on their homework and I will COMPLETELY understand. This week has been particularly difficult and I have given myself and many others mercy on more than one occasion. Life is too short and sometimes we just need a break with no questions asked or explanations needed.

Love this idea of applying the mercy rule more broadly--you're so right, we all need it sometimes.

Love the mercy rule....and like you said, important to remember it from both sides. This past week I applied it to both laundry (me) and a book report (Emma). Sometimes you just gotta know when to say when:) Great post, Em!
