I took several gap years. In between several majors. But it worked for me and I don’t regret a second of it.

Thanks for all the affirmation on postponing the freshman year of college for a year! You all make some great points. You’ll be able to track Ian next year from time to time, post to post. I took 2 “gap” years after my freshman year — except the school called it a “leave of absence” and my father called it “that girl is going to be the death of me”. A gap year BEFORE freshman year would have been much smarter.

I used to work as a college career counselor, and I used to meet with so many students who could have benefited from this. Traveling the world, we met lots of 18- and 19-year-olds from all over the world who were doing this. So good for Ian!

I love this idea. Just like I love when 16 year olds don’t get their drivers license.

I think at 18 you are ready to travel a bit because you will be extra careful while enjoying everything around you. I think at 18 you aren’t mature enough to go to college and drink your face off with people who want to do dirty dirty things to you.

Brilliant!! It’s something that should definitely be more encouraged in the US. I wish it had been before I trucked off to art school back in 1986…

If your son finds himself in the Netherlands, he’s more than welcome to drop me an email and I’d be happy to take him around. We live in a beautiful city called Utrecht (not far from Amsterdam).
