After years of volunteering in my community and at my kids' schools, I've come to a number of similar conclusions: 1) I don't have the patience for meetings that are more about what people say than what people do. Enough with all the talking...let's just make some decisions and get things done! 2) As a working parent, my volunteer time IS my very precious free time...so if I'm not enjoying the volunteer work (whether it's a time-limited or ongoing commitment), I don't do it. And 3) I never hire a babysitter to watch my kids so that I (and/or my husband) can go to a meeting. If we both have something scheduled on the same day and time, one of us goes and one of us stays home. It turns out that when I follow these 3 guidelines, I really enjoy volunteering!!
