People always had different variations of our last name growing up....one common mispronunciation was "Ball-meister" (instead of Baumeister).....well, my brother Brett was nicknamed "Balls" as a result of this (by a bunch of guys on the football team). When I transferred into MN Senior High in my Junior Year people started calling me "Little Balls" (b/c I was Brett's younger sister). My dad did not find it to be very funny, nor cute! In fact, ignoring the obvious (that it was derived from our last name) he asked "what did you do to get that name?????". Nice, huh!!! haha. Right about now Taco is sounding good, huh?!!! haha. Great article Emily!!!

Here you go:

WE nicknamed Ethan "Bug" (see my post entitled my Bug is 14). It annoys him, but Bug he is to this day.

Adam, I have recently learned, has been deemed "Two-Tone" ... undoubtedly because of his infamous two-color hair style that he sported his Jr and most of his Sr year in high-school. Seems the name has lasted longer than the hair.

My sister, back when she was little, used to curl up and mom says she looked like a little mouse. Mousie it was. Hated it through Jr High and High school, came to like it in college, and now she is "Aunt Mousie" to everyone.

When Mousie was little, she couldn't pronounce "Douglas" ... and I became "Do-Do" (yeah, thanks!). It stuck with me for years, but I shook it in High School. Then my son Douglas was born. Adam asked Bammy "What did Mousie call Daddy when they were little?" Without thinking, mom answered "Do-Do". Adam shouted "Cool! Do-Do Junior!" ... Gee, thanks Mom! Yes, even I call him Do-Do now (or even "Do-Do Brain" when he's being ESPECIALLY intelligent). So far, he doesn't seem to mind.

BTW, I love both Chase and Taco ... but the heaping spoonful of irony ... priceless!

Want to feel better about Surf? When I was a child, I knew a child was named David. His last name starts with D, so his initials are DD, and all of us little kids called him Dog Doo! We are over 50 now and guess what! It has stuck! (ew!) Poor Dave! He tried earnestly to put an end to it, even writing threatening letters over the years to the worst offenders, which just encouraged them! His younger brother was nicknamed Pooch for some reason, but I notice everyone calls him Alan now.

Somewhere in the first few years of dating, I started calling my husband B (his name is Brett). It still aggravates his parents 20 years later. Get over it! BTW - I think Taco is cool! Maybe I will start calling him Taco. Then it will be really UNCOOL really quickly!

When I was little I was called Lizard. And I hated it. My mother was the ONLY one allowed to call me Lizzy. And yes, as Judy pointed out, Nacho is a common nickname for Ignacio.

The Taco twist in this story made me laugh. My 13 year old son adores Mexican food and has a specific affection for nacho cheese, poured over anything.

So it shouldn't have surprised me when he came home from school last fall, announcing that he loved his new Spanish class. They got to pick their new 'Spanish names'. Of all the Pedros and Rodrigos he had to pick from, he picked the one that fit him best.

Nacho (as in cheese...)

So all year, in Spanish class, my son has been called Nacho. I guess I should be thankful it hasn't stuck outside of class. (or maybe it has and I just haven't been told)

Boots. They call him Boots. And he has forbidden any of his friends from college, where this nickname was born, from revealing the reason. We insisted that he was to be called "James" and never Jim or Jimmy, and he wasn't. If you know him, you know it's James. Maybe a few "Rosie's" or so in high school, but they know his name is James. Not so at Wesleyan University. He is Boots. At his commencement, when his name was called, we even heard a few "Boooots" being called out - kind of like "Bruuuuce" but not really. When they are here visiting and I say "James" his friends look around like there's someone they may have missed. I always thought Surf was a very cool nickname and suited David perfectly (See, I still call him David, just like his mother does!) and I guess Boots is a cool nickname, if I knew what it meant. But - the biggest insult to motherhood-naming rights - they call his sister Little Boots!!!

My high school friends still call me Crabby, since my maiden name was Crabb. It has nothing to do with my critical nature. Hugh's friends tried to impose nicknames last summer. Hugh was called "Bone" but that didn't seem to stick. My favorite nicknames are the doubles tennis team at the high school. One is super tall and thin, his partner is quite short and muscular. They are Hot Dog and Hamburger.
