I reckon that if (and that's a big IF) the kids were truly upset, it's because the crew represented the only consistent normal pack of adults in their lives.

How's that for effed up.

But I'd lay money on it.

When I was out and about when my kids were little, I used to imagine that we were on a documentary (no reality shows back then!). I would analyze whether it would be viewed as a good mothering documentary or a a bad one. I had an equal amount of each! Unfortunately, I think with the type of people that choose to put their kids on TV, it isn't about the kids at all. It is totally and completely about them.

I think that parenting is about the most altruistic thing a person can do. Sure, I get lots of ego out of my kids (as we all do) when they succeed. But day in and day out, it is about helping them to become good adults.

I get more than an "ick" about these shows. These people should not be raising children! The kids have no one to teach them how to be grown up.

Heenes are crazy. And I grew up in this little college town with a lot of crazies but they are over the top.
For the Gosselins--can you imagine your whole life, these people are here to say "good morning" to you and film you and suddenly not only does daddy move out but so do all the nice people who live in your house with you?
I'm not defending it either way. I'm just saying, having watched the show before Jon quit work, the interaction between kids and crew was really sweet. So no, while the show is nothing I want to watch anymore, I can see why the kids are upset.
And I'm with you. On my least-patient mothering days, I was (ok, am) sure to get the boys out of the house. I do not yell at them as much when we are in public, so I put myself there on my bad days. I'm not proud of it, but there it is. (And yes, we go out on good days too...I'm just militant with myself about getting out of the house when I'm having a bad one!)
