I will admit to bringing a power strip with me to plug into the one “real plug” in my minivan to stop the fighting over who got to recharge their electronic device. I will also admit to bringing the MiFi portable hotspot, which I was validated for when we hit traffic and I asked my 12 year old to go on google maps and hit the “show traffic” button and find me an alternate route. While not very family bonding, electricity, the internet, and 3 sets of headphones made my solo, should-have-been-4-hours-but-really-was-six-hours drive to the beach with 3 boys tolerable for all involved

Haha, Em, I actually still get to sit in the back if we are traveling with the dog, who sits shotgun. I will send you pics- my dog is basically laughing at me.

Oh my — you nailed it. I would like to say it gets easier — and it does. You no longer have to contort yourself when your kids can get their own cheese stix and not eat 10 of them. But the territorial follies continue in the backseat forEVER. Look at the bright side – at least you dont have to sit in the backseat with them any more! I know you did that — right? I did. Sigh.

A very vivid picture that everyone can relate to that captures a distinct summer experience! I do think that “dads” have an inate ability to tune out those little voices that call from the back seat!

right on, jessie, your description makes me feel i’m on the way to “wally world.” i can’t remember too much from my earliest road trips–basically just that a 2-hour car ride felt like an eternity, the skin on my legs sticking to our station wagon’s vinyl seats, and the (deferred) dream of visiting a TCBY rest stop. and thank you for your “resistance” point–not an easy thing to do, but letting go in on my “to-do” list everyday.
