"Geoffo" is right: NPR's "Radio Lab" did a segment on the very research he mentions awhile back. Interesting -- yet super frightening -- stuff.

The "brain cleanse" is coming (think "Eternal sunshine of the spotless mind", but with drugs). The right medication, given at the right time after a traumatic experience, may reduce the psychologically damaging effects of the experience. Interesting research, but fraught with medical and ethical complications.

For now, a good run, a hot shower, and a weekend in the Presidential Suite of the Waldorf Astoria will get the job done.

Emily, I LOVE the idea of a "brain cleanse." In the Native American tradition, Maikael and I will sometimes "smudge" the house by burning a bundle of dried sage. It's supposed to cleanse the house of any bad juju hanging around -- we do it when nothing seems to be going right. It's symbolic more than anything, but it seems to help. And I've noticed that, in my personal life, yoga really helps me to achieve "brain cleanse" once a week. I always feel better afterwards.
