Lindsay, the Hugh photo must be the angle. I was under the impression he still looked just like my side of the family, but I could be wrong. You can judge for yourself in August!

Congratulations to my godson Ian and his wonderful parents! Wish I could have been there also but glad to see he had a strong contingent! Sorry to hear of your seating problems! BTW-Hugh in the photo, when did he start looking just like Chris instead of a Crabb?!

I believe Will had the coveted blue and white striped cap. Yes, the car seats are gone and now Ian's in the driver's seat. In re the graduation ceremony: my advice is to leave your house crazy-early, like 3 hours in advance. Bring a book and enjoy the lack of stress!

How time does fly-wasn't I just visiting you as a homecare nurse yesterday and introducing Ian and Will to each other? I too cherish the memory of Ian and Will playing with Thomas and friends in your Lansdowne home (loved the hardwood floors) and the photo of the kids all lined up on my sofa just after Christmas (most in car and infant seats!)Now we watch our young men embarking on their life journey.
Congratulations to Ian and you all. It is truly a time to reflect on the great job you and Chris have done in raising your sons.
Next year it is our turn to watch Will walk down the aisle towards his goal and another transition in our life. I just hope our weather is better- our drive will be a lot further! Love to you all.

Liz, that brought tears to my eyes. Freddy is like our 4th son, he always fits right in with whatever's happening in the household. Loved everything you said, especially the last line. At Halloween, I will have to post the pictures of our little boys in their amazing dad-crafted train costumes.

I was so glad that I had the chance to congratulate dear Ian in person. Wow, graduation! Time has passed so quickly from Freddy's and Ian's Thomas the T. E. days and now.

When I picked Freddy up from his sleepover the other night I asked him if he felt that his friendship with Ian was as strong now that they live in two different countries and see each other only once or twice a year. He said, "Mom, Ian is my oldest friend. Whenever we see each other it's like it's always been. We may change, but our friendship doesn't."

So here's to Ian for reaching another milestone and here's to our young men for valuing their friendship no matter how far from the station yard each of them may wander.

The under the bleachers graduation sounds like quite a story -- Congratulations to all of you. Wasn't he just born?

Maybe what we learned from our grown-ups was to be more genuine with our kids. It always seemed to me that most of the adults I knew as a kid were posing as adults -- there were only a few who talked with you like you were a real human yourself. I valued those people when I was a child, and I still value them. I think most of us got the message when we were growing up to be relatively honest with kids.

Great question, Tracie. Teens today have definitely not automatically rejected everything their parents loved as young adults, which I agree is surprising. Maybe popular music just got hugely better with the dawn of rock and roll, and that made it more enduring. Then again, they are getting tattoos in large numbers whereas we weren't into that....so I guess there's still some trailblazing going on.

Congrats to Ian!! And congrats to Mom and Dad and brothers too! You've got two to go - I've got one. Wish we lived closer so we could have a Moms of Grads celebration together.

Oh - and so glad that you mentioned the closing of the generation gap. I've talked of that so often with my kids, explaining that "in MY day, we wouldn't have been caught dead doing ___________." (fill in the blank with whatever your parents did). Interesting sociological question, I think, as to why this is. I first noticed it several years ago when I heard Greatful Dead music blaring from the CD player of a next-door neighbor's teenaged daughter, and later when my own daughter went nuts over my Beatles records (as in, large round black disks that do not work in the car.) I would have jumped off the roof rather than listen to Guy Lombardo as a teen. Think it could just be the music? Or is it just that we parents nowadays are so COOL?
