I tried that book too and was not impressed. I had the same feelings you did about it. Mostly I just didn't care about the story enough to keep going. I prefer a memoir where I am forced to stay up late to read 'just one more chapter'. That option seemed like torture with this book. Glad I'm not alone.

Thank you for the reminder, Jim! I completely forgot. Probably buried under magazines and heavy stacks of Malcolm's preferred reading, the Guinness Book of World Records.

I have a Kindle, and I hardly ever use it. Not because I don't like it, but because I have SO MANY books sitting here at home, that it just doesn't make sense to buy books just so I can read them on the Kindle.

Also, I'm going to get rid of Kindle, because I've recently come to the conclusion that Amazon is not where I want my money to go. Instead, I'll buy a second generation iPad (hopefully they make it so you can read a book on it non-back-lit). The reason is because publishing is going through a time of change, and if publishing went south, Amazon wouldn't be hurt at all. Books are not where they make their money, so I'm going to support businesses who DO make their money and their livelihood off of books.

Oh dear. I'm so so sorry. I just realize I've become that crazy hippie I always thought was kind of silly and idealistic. *sigh* When did THAT happen?

I never feel bad not finishing a book. I guess I'm all alone here. I rarely walk out of a movie but I will put down a book with no hard feelings.

Does that make me a bad person, not willing to give the struggling writer the proper chance? I don't know. But if I try and finish something I don't like then I end up not paying attention to it anyway. My mind wanders and it's a waste.

As for the kindle, I have a lot to say on this matter. I do love books, to hold them, and turn their soft pages--having said this, i think ebooks is going to revolutionize how we view media--and the industry is desperate right now. Don't get a kindle, wait if you can. The iPad is about to launch. Still wait. The second generation iPad will probably be even better.

But let's still buy those book we want in our bookcases! I can't image a world without hardcover books. Look how beautiful your top image of your post is today!

I am a wee bit jealous of your snow storm--everybody home and nowhere to go. Sounds amazing. And cookies???????

I think Kindle is inevitable for you, Jennifer (or a competitive brand, if there is one. IPad?). Not to replace the tactile turning of pages, but to give you options. I've heard RAVES about Kindle from 2 people whose opinions I really respect.

Thanks, neighbor. Next time I'm bereft of books, I'll come raid your shelves. David Copperfield by the fireplace - what could be more perfect? I strongly believe all 19th century English authors should be read ONLY in the winter.
Katie, I'll have to investigate The Hogfather. Most intriguing!

Being in Buffalo, and no stranger to the shut in dilemma, I have a shelf of "re-readables". The shelf has a very diverse selection. Paul hassles me about them. I will read certain books over and over until they fall apart and then I buy new copies. I could probably recite the first two chapters each of A Little Princess, Interview With The Vampire or The Hogfather to you verbatim (Though not all at the same time or it would make a very creepy monologue indeed...)

Horrible!

Jennifer, our personal library is not huge, but until you get the Kindle, feel free to walk over and see if you can't find something more suitable. I have no books by anyone named Rhoda, Mennonite or otherwise.

I was lucky enough to be 3/4 through David Copperfield when the power went out yesterday, so I was more than happy to break away from the work and curl up next to the fire with it.
