I envy those of you with younger kids who are still reading aloud. As with all things, there will come a night when it's the last night you ever read to them...but you probably won't know it when it happens.

Now that I am working, traveling and pulled in all directions, I have been better at making time to read (and cuddle) with 9 1/2 year old Spencer before bed. He reads to himself non-stop, but there is something in the connection of reading aloud! We were moved to tears the other night when reading about a mama and baby boy kitten in The Underneath, a beautifully written book which I read somewhere should be read aloud to do it justice.

Reading aloud has always been a tradition in our house. With our boys recently turned 13 and 11, Michael still reads to them every night, alternating between a book of their choosing and one of Michael's choosing. It's a great way to expand their horizons past Bionicle/Percy Jackson/Harry Potter.

My Librarian Grandmother read to us every day we spent together when we were little, and when we were "too old" she would help us with our homework and read passages from our text aloud so we could hear and see what it was we were supposed to learn.

I'm eternally grateful to her for that.
