Child the first hates him a thunderstorm...crawls up as close as he can get to me, and I did think of him the other afternoon at school and hoped he didn't hear it. Of course, he was actually home with his grandma b/c of conferences/half days, so there.

Child the second, the one like me, loves her some thunderstorms. I was hoping she'd heard the big boom boom. S'my girl!

We recently had a thunderstorm here in the Bay Area. Goofdad is right, there aren't many.

But this winter, in the middle of a dark night all hell broke loose. Tom and I looked at each other and waited to hear the pitter patter of feet running into our bedroom. It never came! Not only did my kid's not fear the thunderstorm, they slept right through it!

I missed the days when they came crawling into my bed and would have them count between the thunder and the lightening!

Growing up in the San Francisco Bay Area, thunderstorms were few and far between.

I remember one in particular, when we just had the 4 boys and my eldest girl was a baby. We were on a queen sized bed, and one by one the boys came up to get comfort through the storm. If you can imagine 5 children under 10 and two adults on one queen sized bed ... we got them settled and back to sleep. Then my wife and I got up (quietly), opened the hide-a-bed in the living room, and slept out there leaving the kids in our bed.

I miss those days ...

Lack of control = abject terror, for me.

My son doesn't mind thunderstorms, but has informed me that he doesn't want to live in California because they have earthquakes there. He's very concerned about tsunamis and tornadoes, as well.

I remember all my boys going through an Age of Anxiety, usually in the early elementary years. Storms would definitely set off the mental alarms, and they would have to be in close proximity to me. Malcolm used to fret and worry about tornadoes in particular. Now all of that is history. Funny how these phases are so intense, and then they're gone - like thunder.
