It does appear that our educational-military-industrial complex is too huge and interwoven to ever be untangled. And Dave, thanks for the depressing news that elementary teachers might be taking those spots. Hello, that makes no sense at all. How about using Wallingford Presbyeterian's massive parking lot instead? It's closer and high school kids would not lose out on one of their few privileges.

MemeGRL is right... it's all about High School Sports. There's plenty of research to support the logic of flipping the schedule!..

Oh... and Hugh better be holding his breath and crossing his fingers b/c a lot of those parking spots may just go to the Elementary Teachers who can't park at our construction site next year! :-)

I also heard the explanations that one school can not change the hours due to after school sports schedules, even though they tell us our teenagers need more sleep.

What ever happened to the old days when we started high school at 8:15 am and went until 2:15 PM and still managed to get to our sports activities, do our social networking, or work an after school job, etc. On top of that some of us even had to walk a mile plus, every day, rain or shine. There where very few 2 car families. If we were late more than twice it meant detention and that really screwed up the day.

Jen, there's also 'enforced discipline'. Without follow through, demands and threats are pointless. After years of practice, I now find a loud and authoritative "ONE..." gets the boys moving quickly. In fact, I haven't said the number two to them in over five years.

Sadly, I dont think this will get resolved anytime soon but the thought of teens going later makes much sense. Still I bet they would complain no matter what time they had to wake up. I feel like the biggest nag in the a.m. but at least they still care if they are late -- once they stop caring - Im toast.

Who told you that "it's all about safety" story about elementary bussing with a straight face? Don't let anyone kid you--the reason high school starts first has nothing to do with leaving in the dark. It's all about sports schedules and how far the teams have to travel to get to the furthest places.
My father was a school administrator and I got to hear all about the tails wagging the dogs as the athletic conferences were created and schedules based on travel times. He knew about the sleep issues even then but was vetoed by the athletic directors. He was a fan of varsity sports but watched a relatively small percentage of the district's students' needs determine the schedules for every school in the district and every school in the league.
