Ahhh.. School supplies. Took Tommy to Target for his, got everything but the binder-size 3 hole punch, the book covers and the 120.00 calculator. On the way passed I asked him if he wanted to go to Staples to get the rest... He said no, I stopped anyway.. The line was down one side of the store and across the back but the cashiers were moving the line along... Got the calculator that I swore I wasn't buying, the book covers and the binder-size hole punch, 137.00 in addition to the 40.00 or 50.00 I had spent at Target...

At about 2:00 the next day, Tommy texts me(yes, Marple allows them to use their phones in some classes) and tells me that the Algebra teacher said the kids could borrow the calculator from the school for the year... Yep 120.00 for a calculator that he could have borrowed...

Oh, how I love school supplies! I can't ever escape the clutches of Staples without emerging with some economy size package of Post-It notes or colored envelopes. Then again, I don't have any school aged kids so perhaps my enthusiasm will be dampened when I have to take out a second mortgage to pay for all of this stuff.

How I loved covering my books with those paper bags and then decorating them in graffiti throughout the year. Talk about an anthropological artifact!

As a retired teacher, I couldn't agree more with what we actually mean when we send home the supply lists!

Our fourth grade list did not include the dreaded calculator, but did "highly recommend" an electronic speller. Much to my daughter's dismay, I opted for a good, old-fashioned dictionary. Despite my gut reaction of horror, I may have sprung for it if I hadn't already been asked to spend nearly $15 on Avery indexed dividers. Come on, people - it's fourth grade!

Can I tell you how many times kids come in and show me their supplies and I'm like "What's that for?" And then there are the supplies kids proudly bring in which were clearly identified to be left at home (See loose leaf paper)...If I had it my way the list would be much shorter!

In case anyone is ever looking for their 24 pencils lost in the first week...they all show up in my dryer! Just come to my house if you need them back for homework...at this point we have so many we could put an addition on the house using only pencils for construction!

They don't use brown paper bags anymore? That was like a rite of passage. And Emma's supply list said 6 glue sticks, and i could only find single packaged ones. Plus her teacher said, "Label absolutely everything with you child's name.". Phil poured me a glass of wine after he saw me trying to write "Emma" with a fine tip Sharpie on every. Single. Pencil. Very funny post...and one we can all relate to for sure!

Oh, the school supplies. Abby had to have everything new. Even though we easily had the requisite # of pencils around the house, they wouldn't cut it. And what's with the spiral bound notebooks? They bring them home at the end of the school year and there are maybe 10 pages used. I say rip em out and reuse those puppies!

Abby brought absolutely everything with her today even though she's been told they don't change classes on the first day. Gotta admire the dedication to a perfect start!

Our first year, I tried so hard to mimic precisely what was on the list that I'm sure its where my gray hair started! holy cow, what stress, and then lugging it into school. I have definitely relaxed since then. Oh and girls LOVE the colored highlighters!
