Bronte's characters are more akin to contemporary soap characters.
You are as likely to find Soccer Hooligans at Premier League Man United games as you are at Swarthmore College Soccer games. The tickets and corporate reputation are too dear to permit that kind of fan unfriendly comportment from ticket buyers. English national and working class fans gooning up to root for Millwich and Liverpool's sides are the most notorious.

Sarah, I'll add Reliable Wife to my brooding autumn reading list. And Melanie, I love Kate Bush, must listen to that song again now that I might actually get the lyrics.

LOVE Wuthering Heights, and will admit that I was inspired to read it in the early 80s after hearing Kate Bush's song which was inspired by the novel. Yikes...I'm dating myself!

Just finished A Reliable Wife by Robert Goolrick, written in 2010 but compared to the Bronte sisters. Set in Wisconsin about 100 years ago. Much sorrow, secrets, insanity.
