Limiting the scope of conversation can be the best way to stay in touch. I have a couple of friends who were roommates for a year in China. They knew they would not be living close to each other ever again, so it would be hard to stay in touch.

Their solution? They agreed to NEVER write emails more than 1 paragraph. That way the recipient would not feel pressured to write an equally-long reply they never would have time for. They could not hide behind the excuse that "I wanted to wait until I could write you a really GOOD email." I don't know how long it worked, but while it did I know they stayed super close via short, sweet updates.

That's funny, Lindsay grew up in Las Vegas!
I am always amazed when I hear about people who talk to their sisters on the phone 5 times a day. I cannot even begin to imagine doing that!

It's a wonderful thing in life when you know someone well enough that you can skip the "filler" and move onto the meaty stuff. My best friend lives in Las Vegas, and we used to spend our entire phone conversations catching up in the minutiae of our everyday lives. We finally realized that we BOTH hated doing that -- and hated talking on the phone as a consequence -- and finally gave ourselves permission to skip all that and move onto whatever meaty subject was weighing most heavily at the moment.
