The egg book was about chickens, eggs, and which came first, natch. Also feathers, ways of candling, different types of breeds and broods, and recipes. It was published after the World's Fair in 1933 so probably was a compendium of all the info gleaned from that gathering. Here's a link to the etsy sale with more pix:

Love those old book covers Jennifer! I'm curious as to what the egg book is about. Ok, I know - eggs. But a whole book? Inquiring minds want to know.

I don't know... I feel for Hugh. I'm not a Steinbeck fan to begin with (excepting 'Of Mice and Men' and 'Travels With Charley'), and East Of Eden in particular was a nightmare. The book goes on for what seemed like hundreds of pages just to discuss whether our natures are inevitable, or if we can change based on our having free will... Meh.

I believe I've got one of those Wizard of Oz books. Must rummage through the bookshelves.
And I don't remember having to read books over the summer either, back in the 1970s. I think it is a new thing.

Have you seen the original covers of the many, many books in the Wizard of Oz series? They are just gorgeous. I'm going from childhood memory, but I'm sure they'd hold up today!

East of Eden is my FAVORITE John Steinbeck book, once you get past the flowery descriptions in the first few pages of the book! Let Hugh know it gets better; I promise! Growing up (I am 31), I never had required reading to complete before school. Is this a new thing? Or was I just poorly educated?
