SAE, glad you are a positive critic of Ian's portraiture, especially since you spend a lot of time in galleries and know your art stuff. As for Hugh's bowl head, let's just say we were economizing on salon visits. H is of course unhappy to have this haircut be so very public but that's what happens when your mom has a blog. Z&T, fingers crossed that Ian will be accepted at a school of his choice. We're still in the "just looking" mode.

The nine years old Ian adroitly creates shading and depth for Hugh's eyes, suggests rumpled jeans with few lines, and defines the top of the cheek with a single pencil stroke. His treatment of clothes suggests that Ian did not fuss with lots of extra pencil lines to represent pattern, collar shape, or a even length for the waist of the sweater. Really fine work for any age illustrator!
Less fine is the bowl cut Hugh was issued to carry his pate forward for four to six weeks. That may also reflect a certain family member's lack of artistic ability or the hair victim's reluctance to sit for a haircut. Next time, try a gravy boat.

I'm also fascinated by what show's up in who. My oldest son is like my husbands clone, looks, personality and all. And my younger looks just like me, and matches my childhood temper tantrums!

Congratulations to your son.
