We used to hear mountain lions in the woods. Sounded just like a woman screaming. During the summer nights, with the windows open, it was a startling sound (to say the least).

Petersen's Guide is a great thought - I really should have some such thing at hand. It's shameful that I can visually ID only the obvious, like bluejays and cardinals and robins. And a roadrunner - how exotic! - I would know one of those too.

Just this morning I heard a roadrunner cluck like a chicken. I had no idea roadrunners made sounds, nevertheless a clucking sound. It was kinda weird. I heart roadrunners.

The former owners of our new house were avid bird watchers, and my new home office window faces a flower garden with four bird feeders, three bird baths, and a half dozen bird houses. It's quite a change from my prior attic accommodations and I find myself staring out the window as finches, wrens, nuthatches, chickadees, sparrows, woodpeckers, cardinals, etc. fly in and out of view. My grandfather's well-worn Petersen's Guide is coming in handy. My productivity, on the other hand, is somewhat diminished! The only downside is the early (and I mean EARLY) morning chorus, but I'm sure we'll get used to it.
