This had me cracking up as I was thinking of you making up this story for this cabbie. I can relate to something feeling just a bit easier to do in the moment. And then I felt a little sad at all the assumptions we make every day about others. Like so many of your posts, thoughtful and emotional. Love it.

I say when you are in a cab at the crack of dawn, with a cold to boot, you take the path of least resistance. And from what I know of Jesus, he didn't always feel like making small talk either.

I don't like assumptions either and I guess I probably make them just as much. It probably feels about the same when someone asks me what church I go to and I have to explain I do not.

Great post Em. I have a dear friend named Steve that ran into the same problem which he refers to as the December dilema while he was having his weekly lunch with his old pals from work, people that new him for years. ANd he ducked the the answer or felt awkward about giving one.

Minorities! Maybe this says something about the lack of thought and compassion by majorities in the U.S.A. and the world.

So over the years I have taken a stand. I don't celebrate Christmas, I am Jewish. That is what I say and this invariably leads to - OH! that's the Jewish Christmas. Answer -no, just a minor Jewish festival. Try it next year. Love you... and see you real soon for the Bar Mitzvah something that we can own as ours.

Loved that you wondered "what would Jesus do?" And yes, I'm quite certain He would have told folks he was Jewish. Too funny.

OK, I am a lesbian momma. Who split with my kids' other mother, and much to my surprise and my mother's delight, married a man. Who is a fine man, fine enough to be cool with the other mother and known donors- 3 of them!- who are part of our family.

I say all this because I really identify with that moment when you are thinking, how much do I feel like explaining to this person, at this moment, about their false assumptions of how this one is related to that one? Its hard and energy consuming sometimes-and it seems to me the factors promoting the easy way out really outweighed the energy required to explain it all on that early morning cold ridden cab ride. I get that- and I support you in every now and again, taking a free ride.

I read you regulary- had to post a comment this time. Happy New Year.
