I get unusually angry and upset when I make lunch for the girls in the morning and they forget it. I mean I am out of control. Even I know I am being insane about the whole thing. I couldn't quite put my finger on what makes me so upset. Now I know- you have absolutely hit the nail on the head. You're right- making those lunches is for my sake. They actually prefer to buy now that you mention it. I guess I'm not too crazy when I cry because I open the fridge to find their lovingly prepared lunch box staring back at me. Thank you!

Why we are perfect... I find the entire sandwich making process completely tedious... crumbs everywhere, mayo for one, mustard for the other...
...but I LOVE making them dinner :-)

I have absolutely no interest in making my children sandwiches. Or dinner. Or breakfast. My oven broke yesterday and if I didn't have a bake-aholic daughter, I'm not sure I'd bother replacing it. I guess what I'm saying is that feeding my loved ones in no way appeals to me. Sheesh.

Wow. I just got really sad reading this post! I have 2 boys that are still young enough for me to make their sandwiches for them. Except that they don't care much for sandwiches. I giggled a little in relief at this line: "I am so relieved that the guys entered the wonderful world of condiments. Making dry sandwiches always made me thirsty for them. Ok, not too much though, I don’t want the sandwich to get too soggy. I can add a little more for Chase. Hmm, that enough? " It drives me nuts that when they do have a sandwich, it is dry. This gives me hope that one day they will like mayo or mustard. :) Thank you, for the glimpse into the future. :)

I love making sandwiches, too, although I don't really enjoy eating them that much. Maybe a reason to have some kids????

OMG. I loved this post. As the mom of two girls, my mother LOVES to make Phil sandwiches. She goes to the store THAT DAY to make sure everything is fresh. Even if he's not hungry, he still let's her make it...so true that sandwiches = love...especially for boys:)

Ah what a lovely post! I really enjoy preparing picnic lunches for my boys when they go on a school outing. I always try to include a surprise item that they love, like some cubes of cheese in a little box, or some cherry tomatoes.
You're right, it's a very individual sort of nurturing.
Your post made me think of when I had just started work and was still living at home. My dad, newly retired, was always awake really early and he got into the habit of preparing some sandwiches for my lunch. We had a tupperware that was the exact size of 3 half sandwiches, so there was always one double one and one extra. He loved to find unusual fillings as a surprise, and sometimes put the "odd" one in the middle of the other two. Eating my lunch would always bring a smile... Ham, tomato, ham? Cheese, egg, then sardines? Every evening when I got home my dad was eager to know what I thought of the latest variety or combination!
Which is what I find myself doing now, when my boys get home from their school trip..."did you like your picnic?"
