Jen, you can definitely stop now. At least you've read the first book - Lindsay can give you the executive summary of the other two.

Anne, I like your innovation of chugging beer every time a character makes coffee....I guess chugging coffee is out of the question, too high a risk of burns. Rob, good analogy with the Painter of Light guy. Find a winning formula, lather, rinse, and repeat. Becky, so true, inter-library loan online is fantastic. And Lindsay, so you're saying that had the original title stuck, Chris could have been the Man who Hated the Men Who Hate Women? Catchy! I will google the Nora Ephron piece, thanks for the tip.

Have read all three! The first two for book group- I had a hard time getting interested. Still have mixed feelings, don't care for the writing style but somehow the outrageous plots sucked me in and I did read the third book by choice. Nora Ephron wrote a very funny piece with "umlat" in the title complaining about the names all sounding alike, the unnecessary detail with the street names and Lisbeth's sullen character, it was very funny.

Jennifer,

I experienced the same love/hate relationship with The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. It was difficult to read and I put it down after it did not spark an interest. On the cruise, I started reading it again (mainly because it was on my kindle) and finally finished it. It was quite a struggle and I don't think that I am going to read the other books. I am done!

Have not read it. Only here to say that the inter-library loan option on the internet makes me very happy!

I'm with Chris on this one. I haven't read (and will never read) any of this drivel. It was well marketed and timed (just right) for build up and release during the "beach-read" season. The formula is stale because the later books were hacked togethor by Harlequin Romance-type ghost writers, and not edited even in Swedish (even more obvious in the translation). The guy's surviving brother and father are running a scam...like that Thomas Kinkade "Painter of Light" fraud. As a resident of Sweden, I can say that none of this exciting, entralling stuff has ever or will ever happen here, so forget it.

So yea, I'm totally with Chris but I'm only half way through the first book. I am scratching my head because several people that I deeply respect loved this book, but I am not getting it. I feel like I keep watching that annoying scene at the end of a bad movie when someone explains the plot to the dumb guy. And yes, it needs some editing. Is this really a good sentence: " The insight struck him like a thunderbolt out of a clear sky."? It sounds like a simile lesson for 5th graders. I've decided to start a drinking game whereby I chug every time he mentions making coffee. So I'll finish it just to see it through, but I doubt I'll read the next 2 books. I always enjoy book club when we agree to disagree, it makes the discussion more interesting. :)

Have not heard of the Library Thing, thank you for the tip! Agree, life's way too short to plow through a ho-hum book. My mother in law, in a variation on this rule, also felt life was way too short to bother with reading Martha Stewart Living magazine, which somehow she used to get for free. She would hand them off to me in perfect, crisp condition.
