During Bennett's band concert, I asked Carson what instrument he might like to play when he got older. His reply - piccolo. I then explained to him that in order to play the piccolo he'd have to learn to play the flute first, to which he replied "oh, then drums!". (-:

I'd take any instrument as long as Ian would actually practice it. Of course, he's already moved on from his viola...

Isn't it great when they surprise you with a totally deadpan sarcastic line like that?

The only instrument I keep pushing for is a Slide Trombone, just because I think they're cool. Unfortunately none of my kids has picked one up. I have kids that play the drums, the bells, the piano, the sax, the guitar, the bass, the upright bass, the bagpipes ... but no horn players.

I'm glad Chase is having a good time ... in the end, that's what matters, isn't it?

Great line from Chase! And it does take a super self confident boy to play flute...Ian Anderson aside.

This is a great post, Emily, the gender roles of musical instruments. It's so true! When I was in elementary school, I played the violin. Back then at least, here was the equation:

Band = cool kids
Orchestra = utter dorks

I married a vertical viola man myself ;)

Chase knows that guys may admire the drummers, but chicks dig wind chimes. BTW, is there still an Orff Ensemble at WES? They percussed the hell out of that gym last time I was in the audience.
