"It doesn’t matter who makes more money because for a marriage to work it all has to equal out in the end."

Amen. I wonder if the higher rate at which women are earning college degrees will soon (okay, eventually) correlate to women earning more and thus the stereotypes of a man needing to be the "provider" shifting closer toward your defnition.

There was a time (a short time, and a time long ago) that I made more than Dave.

It was a bit awkward. I'd get mad if he would overspend.

Now his salary is double mine, and I have no problem overspending.

I'm such a jerk.

I think that if there was a twist of fate and I made more I would be okay with him spending the money as he wished, provided it was within reason. I like to think he would have no problem that I made more, but I don't know.

This post has me thinking!

My paycheck is important to me, and knowing that I make a sizable contribution to the house makes me feel good. But knowing that it's only a third of the contribution makes me feel like I should do most (almost all) of the housework but then I feel crappy because I don't believe in women's work and gah! I'm running myself in circles!

THank you for this post. I needed to think about this a bit!

Interesting. When we were first married and for a good 12-15 years thereafter, Michael out-earned me by a factor of two. In recent years, I've caught up to him and we now earn comparable salaries.

We are probably rare in that there is no emotional fall-out in our relationship around money, but I noticed a BIG difference in my own behavior when I started earning "real" money. Much more likely to treat myself to things like pedicures, clothes, etc., after years of being a terrific tightwad.

Great post, Emily. I've never made more than Maikael (and, unless I become a best-selling author, probably never will), but interestingly, when I was working, we followed your "rules" to the letter (except I do cook, but I enjoy it, so that's okay). The NYT has done a few articles on this topic as well over the past year; it's clearly a hot topic.
