While I can hardly imagine Dave actually sitting and "singing along" I do recall as young parents detemining an appropriate "punishment" such as NO TV!! But later regretting it for the punishment was far worse for us, the parents, than the "punished" children. Is pay back a b......? Love you all!

Emily,
Did "Sing-a-long a Sound of Music" ever make it to Philly? I had read the Anthony Lane New Yorker review of it in London--literally crying I was laughing so hard as I read the article aloud to my husband (and I have saved the issue all these years). Folks dress up as their favorite characters (including "brown paper packages tied up with string..." Well, you can read the abstract at: http://www.newyorker.com/archive/2000/02/14/2000_02_14_030_TNY_LIBRY_000020196).

Anyway, we saw it one new years eve, Glenn dressed in a white cotton dress with a blue satin sash... (yes, he did win the prize for best costume, a woolen billy goat that still resides in our attic) and we sang along with subtitles rolling, flashing cards (with the word "Flibberdy-gibbet" on it, for example) or pieces of fabric we were given as we entered the theatre.

The friends we were with did not, sadly, have such an appreciation of the event. They love the movie and, early on, as everyone was singing, laughing, and cat-calling, their 8 year old daughter asked, "Why is everyone laughing?" They apparently felt exactly the same way... they hated to see their favorite movie mocked so.

ah well.
we're not really friends with them anymore, either.
and so it goes....
