We refinanced with Wachovia right before they were bought by Wells Fargo, and our experience was... somewhat less joyful. ; ) But we refi-ed from 30-year fixed to a 15-year fixed, saving money on the monthly which we are using to pay down the principal early, so it worked out well!

When we bought our house, it was our first (and only) time and we were very nervous about the huge sum it felt like we were asking for. When we sat down with our broker, she told us we were approved for an amount more than double what we were asking for. For about three seconds, visions of much grander houses danced in my head until I remembered the fear I had about even the amount we were applying for. When I stammered out a question about that, the broker smiled and said, "Oh, I would never have *approved* you for that. But according to the guidelines, that's what you're eligible for. I'm only telling you that to reassure you that what you are applying for is well within your means." And every day during the height of the crisis, I have prayed for her, grateful that we had such an honorable person, who listened to us, understood our situation, and helped guide us to a mortgage and therefore house that fit who we are and our goals. It would have been SO easy to talk us in to more--not even our max, just more--in that economy, in this region and our micromarket. So we're with you in the happy mortgage holders' club!
