Weeellll, I will have to mildly disagree on this East vs West business. There are amazing vintage treasures to be found out West, just in completely different places than where you find them back east. Yes, yard sales out here are filled with crap, for the most part. Instead, there are flea markets every week, year round that are filled with treasures. I bought the most amazing three piece 1930's kitchen 'thing' for $500. I snagged it right before a dealer couple who had planned to simply take it to their store and easily sell it for $2000. Most people with collectibles don't sell their items on their lawn, they go to the fleas and rent a table. How much more convenient to go to one location, spend a few hours looking at bunches of vendors, and walk away with a carload of treasure. At least that's what I do!

I have maintained the same theory that you posit, so there must be something to it. It'd be fun to come for a Philly visit someday! If you ever see anything especially fabulous, buy it, send it to me, and I'll send you a check!

Elizabeth, you are correct. Long ago I noticed that a disproportionate number of online buyers of my vintage items were in the West. I ship a ton of stuff to California in particular. And my dear friend in LA reports that all the thrift shops out there are full of just plain crap. My theory? The East is the most long-settled part of the US. We have 4+ centuries of accumulated possessions here, whereas those of you in the West have only two.
You would have a much easier time finding vintage nursery decor if you were trolling around here. Come visit! :)

I am convinced that the East Coast has better yard sales than the western US. When I drive by yard sales in New Mexico, it is just a bunch of junk -- I mean, true plastic junk -- set out on a rickety card table to buy. Why do you think that is? I am having a REALLY hard time putting my vintage-inspired nursery together with local finds :(
