I'm still "from Rhode Island" too - after 27 years in the NY/NJ area. After a weekend that included time on Second Beach and a lunch at Flo's, I don't really have to wonder why. When I say I'm going "home," my friends in New Jersey know I meant Rhode Island...

Hmn... Ditto... I could write a book on the subject - in fact, I did - but then, I deleted it since it's your blog. :-)

Other than 2 years in DC post-graduation, I'm the same way, and probably will be for the forseeable future. Same with my husband...he went away to college, moved back home and then hopped around Philly. My parents are gone but his are still here, plus his sisters...it made even a dream job offer in Baltimore seem "too far" when his sister was sick.
But if it makes you feel any better, on our vacation to Colorado, we kept looking at each other saying, Remind me why we aren't moving here. This is amazing. Northern CA too.

Melanie & Elizabeth are right - the grass is always greener. We moved every few years when I was growing up and I've always been jealous of people who have friends they've known since kindergarten. On the plus side, adapting to new neighborhoods/schools/cities/accents makes you quick on your feet and able to fit in to new surroundings. On the down side, people think you're a freak when you get ridiculously involved in your hometown sports teams/news/politics because you're trying so desperately to hold onto some piece of "home," albeit a home you know more from return visits than actually living there for any extended period of time.

Emily, my life is so the opposite that it's interesting to read your perspective. Having lived in four states in 10 years, my wanderlust takes me to the corners of my mind where I wonder, "Wow, what would it be like to have people you've known your whole life just down the block?" Sometimes the change is exciting...and sometimes it's really lonely. As Melanie says, the grass is always greener.

As one who lived in a different house/apt/dorm every year between the ages of 12 and 35, I am envious of the incredible bonds and memories you must have. The grass is always greener...

Separately, what happened in New Mexico to cause that HUGE crack in your windshield?
