First of all, Happy Birthday, kiddo! You are a great friend, a great ex-colleague, a great writer and a great Mom. Just older, is all.

And a great early (if I were Emily, I'd cross that word out right here and now) late adopter of technology.

Cheers.

And now for your gift: Here are some (only some) mandatory (ha!) apps for you to look up and buy. [You will learn to be careful of what you ask of iPhone users.]

News: CNN, NPR News, Fluent News, NYTimes, Politico. (Detect a particular POV here?)

Music: SoundHound - paid version is better than Shazam. But both are VERY cool. Also, Pandora (for sure),

Games: Words with Friends (basically, Scrabble) - free version is fine, and if you get it, play me. QRANK (great daily trivia, current events test) -- ditto on inviting me.

Astronomy (if that's your thing): Space Images, Buzz Aldrin, 3D Sun (spectacular - two LIVE satellites circulating the sun - neato huge explosions and more).

More:

Weatherbug Elite (cuter and more detailed than iPhone's lame version), Voice Memos, Urbanspoon, Dragon Dictation (VERY good at talk-to-type for emails and texts),Epicurious (yum), RedLaser, Barnes&Noble, ShapeWriter (tres neat and valuable if you find yourself writing longish stuff on the phne - check it out), IMDB.

Trash: TMZ

... and that's just a start. Happy Birthday!

Most of my apps are for the pre-K set but I do love Distant Suns, a freebie that shows the night sky for where and when you are! Amazing.

Very nice - I am jealous and really want either an iPhone or an iPad but all the talk about the lousy coverage with AT & T makes me wary. You'll have to let us know how it goes.
