I find it truly amazing how colorblind my kids are. Maybe their generation will advance this issue. Though probably not unless the deep South secedes. They aren’t getting over anything anytime soon.

And Lindsay, I actually know 2 white kids who have a parent in jail on “drug related crimes”. That is not a result of “skin color”.

Spencer, at about the age of his cousin Ella above (6 years old), asked if someone of mixed race, would be vertically cut in half with black on one side and white on the other. I told him no, they would be a shade of brown like his classmate and friend Anthony. Both kids stared at me blankly, having apparently never having noticed Anthony and his brother had brown skin (and never having seen his father who is indeed in prison on drug related crimes). Truly color blind at the time. Spencer loved Anthony’s apartment one of a hand full of low income units in Tiburon. He wished we could be “rich” like them as they had so many things we did not, most notably an Xbox and a bird. He asked if we could trade houses. His mother has a great sense of humor and I shared the story, she laughed and indicted she would be happy to make a trade.

Ella has a more sophisticated skin color sense than most of the country – and she’s probably attuned to unusual hair color as well!

Thanks. That was really funny, and I am laughing myself silly. Ella at SIX still refers to people as “peach” and “light brown” or “dark brown”. I am wondering how the slang “white” and “black” has still not managed to worm its way into her vocabulary, seeing as her school and day care both contain very diverse populations…

We do have a Holmes in our McDonald’s group. He never goes farther than Boonville which is 20 miles away. He does remind us that in the distant past he has visited NYC and he traveled over several states in his job with Shelter Insurance.
