Jess, as usual, I'm amazed at your honesty and now I realize that we have more in common than I originally thought. My son, who I lovingly call "Mr.16," has always been much like your Emma - intense and spirited. I've even used those same words to describe him.
Sleep deprivation was one of the main reasons that Mr.16 is an only child. I had no idea what a life/psyche/mood-altering affect that lack of sleep had on a person until he was born. Wow, your post reminded me. I can remember how tough these days are, but I promise it will get better. I'm sending you and Emma lots of restful peaceful energy.

Beautifully written. Although I don't have children yet, I'm from a family of 5 spirited children (I'm second oldest). I can still remember the family crisis when my youngest sister's popsicle broke. You would have thought we were torturing her. The tantrum lasted for hours. Hours! She was 5. Hours! Just another day at our house. It gets better. We all turned out to be relatively normal people, and close friends as siblings. Now we laugh about those days. Not sure if our mom does, but we're all close to her, too. Hang in there!

Jessie, I'm so glad that Carla and or Colleen made me aware of your blog. I love your writing.
My first child was easy and I thought that all the parents of "problem" children just weren't quite as good at parenting as me. Then I had #2. I signed up for the parenting class in nursery school. The first thing the teacher told us was that the easy kids do not become presidents, CEO, Nobel Prize Winners, etc. It's the ones who are a bit more challenging. That made me feel better and the older #2 gets, the more I see the truth in her statement.

I think your husband is absolutely right that your daughter is picking up on your tendencies. It's tragic that your child's mind is so disturbed, a child that young should not be so stressed. I think you should take a long hard look at how to help your child, rather then writing blogs that are totally consumed by you, you, you. I think your blogs are disgraceful and I feel bad for your children and husband.

Like Emily, gymnastics worked like a charm for me too...I slept like a rock (at least as a kid; as an adult it's a different story), but the multiple head traumas I suffered in the gym may have played a role. How about kickboxing? It seems to be all the rage these days...and don't rule out "Aunt Mo's Secret Sleepy Potion" (a.k.a. milk & french vanilla instant breakfast) as a last resort.

I couldn't imagine dealing with sleep issues that bad. I barely made it through alive (definitely didn't make it through totally sane) when my son was a reflux-addled infant. Ugh. Even though part of you may agree a little, isn't it just so annoying when someone blames your own anxiety for your child's behavior? I was so pissed when a family member mentioned that perhaps my anxiety was like acid in my breast milk causing my son to cry worse. Not helpful.

You poor thing. When we were kids, they didn't have the spirited euphemism
- they just called me "hyper". Mom put me in gymnastics and it fixed everything. Maybe Emma needs an exhausting sport - like tsumo wrestling? If anything would make a good post.
